CSAC Monographs is a series produced by the Centre for Social
Anthropology and Computing, University of Kent, which aims to make
available specialist material in social anthropology and sociology at the
lowest possible cost. Production and distribution costs are kept to a
minimum by the use of information technology and direct mailing.
The intention is to expand the series as rapidly as possible, subject to the
normal processes of peer review. We try to complete these promptly. We
will consider a wide variety of material including: unpublished
dissertations which are still of current interest; edited collections based on
conferences and symposia; new editions of important work currently
unavailable; monographs which because of their unusual length of
specialist nature are not considered commercially viable by conventional
publishers.
Orders and requests for further information can be sent to the address
above.

Introduction
Drei Schwestern und ihre Kinder
Rekonstruktion von Familiengeschichte und Identitätstrans-
mission bei Indischen Nederlanders mit Hilfe computerunter-
stützter Inhaltsanalyse <,>br>
Oliver Kortendick
Two aspects are focussed in this work. Firstly, its objective is to
describe the families' role concerning the individual discovery of
identity. Secondly, procedures of systematic content analysis are
used and tested in an ethnological context. To collect data, group
discussions were conducted. The author uses new and innovative
techniques to study unstructured data both qualitatively and quanti-
tatively. Recent software developments promise considerable
progress in the field of text analysis. The results of this book are
encouraging. By introducing new and adapting existing instruments
the essential outcome of the qualitative analysis can be proved by
quantitative methods. In addition, it could be shown that certain
structures such as the relation between informants and their ideas
and concepts can be illustrated by Iooking at the frequency of
words. With the help of his basic analytical principles Kortendick
points out a way to finally solve the problem of the analysis of large
and non-native language text corpora.
Oliver Kortendick was born and raised up in Duisburg, Germany.
He studied Anthropology and Sociology in Göttingen, Amsterdam
and Cologne, where he got his M.A. (1990) and Ph.D. (1995). He
did fieldwork in the Netherlands and has also worked in Tanzania
and Papua New Guinea. Since 1990 he has held positions in
Cologne and Canterbury.
